The business name Oceaness, is derived from the first trading enterprise established by Duncan Mather in 1989, Ocean Engineering and Stochastic Services, a reference in part to the subject of his PhD thesis. This relied heavily on applied mathematics to investigate the random statistical (i.e. stochastic) properties of deep ocean breaking waves, and in part also notes the career work he’d already begun as an engineer in subsea and offshore construction.

A little more fancifully, the name also offers a nod to Lyonesse, the lost kingdom between Land’s End and the Isles of Scilly of Arthurian legend, a land that sunk beneath the waves before Tristan, its intended ruler and knight of the Round Table could claim it following his fathers’ death.
